A Michigan couple has been charged with murder in the death of their 7-year-old son, who weighed 255 pounds at the time of his passing. Prosecutors allege that Damien O’Brien and Jessica O’Brien fed their son, Casper, a “steady diet of snack foods” and neglected his medical needs, contributing to his death.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton stated that the child was not receiving adequate nutrition. Casper died on Nov. 4, 2025, from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart's ability to pump blood, according to the Genesee County Medical Examiner’s report. His weight was identified as a contributing factor.
Authorities described the situation as tragic and a case of serial neglect. Investigators found the family home filled with trash, and Casper was reportedly nonverbal, bedridden, and suffering from bedsores and rashes. He was also not enrolled in school.
Despite having health insurance, the family allegedly failed to seek necessary medical care for Casper. Records indicate he last saw a doctor in February 2024, when he weighed 104 pounds. The parents have been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and second-degree child abuse. An attorney for Damien O’Brien stated his client maintains his innocence.
