The six children and their mother, who were fatally shot by the father and husband in a Grand Haven Township murder-suicide, are being remembered through heartfelt obituaries that highlight their unique personalities and future dreams.

Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and her six children, aged 5 to 15, were found dead in their home last month. Police stated that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot his wife and children before setting the house on fire and taking his own life. Investigators are working to determine the precise timeline of events, but authorities believe Amanda Karolkiewicz died before the children. The family's pets also perished in the fire.

A Glimpse into Their Lives

Keegan Karolkiewicz, 15, the eldest sibling, was a competitive cross-country runner who had recently passed his driver's education and anticipated obtaining his license the following year. He was described as outgoing and friendly, often making sure to include others. He also enjoyed sharing popular social media trends with his younger siblings.

Bennet, 12, was an enthusiastic fisherman who had recently obtained his hunting license and successfully bagged his first deer. He also had a keen interest in history, particularly World War II.

Smith, 11, was a dedicated vegetarian who, despite reservations about fishing, participated in family outings and took responsibility for looking after his younger brother, Teddy. Smith had recently learned to waterski and play golf.

Ella and Caroline, both 11, were adopted from China and had recently traveled back to the country with their mother. Ella was described as her mother’s shadow, a burgeoning fashionista with an artistic flair who enjoyed crafting. Caroline, who was born with limited use of her right side, excelled in basketball, swimming, and fishing, and was an avid reader, completing 100 books in one summer.

Teddy, 5, the youngest, was known as a “celebrity” among his siblings’ friends and was anxious about starting kindergarten at the same school where his mother worked as a substitute teacher. His obituary notes his energetic and resilient nature.

Amanda Karolkiewicz’s obituary states she dedicated her children's book, “The Magical Mantra” (2023), to her children, modeling a life of curiosity, courage, and self-sacrifice. Her family remembers her as someone who made the world a better place.

A celebration of life for the family is planned for later this month in Grand Haven.
