Michigan Man Arrested for Threats Against FBI Director Kash Patel

Federal authorities have arrested a 42-year-old Michigan man in connection with alleged death threats directed at FBI Director Kash Patel and an associate. Anthony Daniel Palazzolo, of Chesterfield Township in Macomb County, was taken into custody on October 30, according to a newly unsealed criminal complaint.

Court documents indicate that Palazzolo sent a Facebook message in early October to an unnamed associate, claiming he had "put a hit out" on them before turning his attention to the FBI chief. In the message, Palazzolo allegedly used explicit language, referring to Patel as a "punk a**" and stating that Patel was a "dead mf too."

During an interview with investigators in October, Palazzolo admitted to sending the messages and offered an apology, stating he had "no intent to harm anyone." However, court filings suggest a different narrative, with Palazzolo also vowing to confront agents at the FBI office and "use deadly force against every single one of you government officials."

In addition to the threats against Patel, Palazzolo is accused of sending messages to the Secret Service, the Supreme Court, and a Texas court. One message allegedly contained a threat to "sodomize a government official."

Palazzolo appeared in a Detroit federal court on October 30 to face a felony charge of transmitting threatening interstate communications, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. He is currently being held pending a detention hearing scheduled for November 2. His attorney declined to comment.

The FBI stated that Palazzolo has a history of legal issues, with a criminal record spanning Michigan, Texas, and Florida. His past charges include falsely reporting a terrorist threat in 2018 and making a fake bomb threat.

The arrest occurs amidst a rise in federal criminal cases involving threats against politicians and public officials. Data from the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center at the University of Nebraska Omaha and Chapman University shows that over 850 threat-related cases have been prosecuted nationwide since 2013, with last year marking an all-time high of 133 cases. Federal authorities are reportedly on track to surpass that record this year.

This is not the first time threats have been made against individuals close to the FBI Director. Earlier this year, a Massachusetts man was arrested for allegedly sending threatening emails to Patel's girlfriend, Alex Wilkins, which included violent remarks about her. That individual, Alden Welch Ruml, was charged with making threats in interstate commerce.
