William Lawrence, a candidate in Michigan's 7th Congressional District, previously expressed admiration for radical influencer Hasan Piker and sought an opportunity to appear on his livestream. Lawrence, who won his House primary last week and is set to face incumbent Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Mich.) in November, met Piker at an event for US Senate hopeful Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in April.

At the time, Lawrence described himself to Piker as a progressive organizer and co-founder of the Sunrise Movement. He stated, "I'm pro-Palestine, anti-war. Yes to housing and healthcare. No to bombs and billionaires. And you're the man, so thanks for being here." Lawrence also offered Piker campaign literature and expressed a desire to join his stream.

Lawrence, who was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) until shortly before the Aug. 4 primary, is campaigning as a self-described democratic socialist. The 7th District, which includes Lansing, is considered a key race for progressives. Republicans have previously criticized Democrats for associations with Piker, who has made controversial statements, including one in 2019 that "America deserved 9/11." Piker later characterized the comment as "inappropriate" due to its potential use by Republicans. More recently, Piker has drawn attention for displaying a framed New York Times front page from Sept. 12, 2001, and for his commentary on the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. He has also expressed admiration for figures like Mao Zedong and made statements critical of the Republican Party.

Lawrence's campaign stated that he has not appeared on Piker's show and has no plans to do so, nor is his team pursuing it. The campaign also noted that Lawrence does not necessarily agree with all of Piker's statements. Lawrence contrasted himself with his opponent, stating, "Unlike Tom Barrett, who hides from mid-Michigan voters, I show up and answer to the people." He added that he makes himself available to answer questions in person across the district and online, and has engaged with media and creators from across the political spectrum, including Fox News.
