Michigan Football Player Apologizes for Leaked Criticisms of Coaches

Michigan Wolverines tight end Zack Marshall has issued an apology after leaked group chat messages revealed him criticizing the team's offensive coordinator and scheme. The messages surfaced following Michigan's recent loss to Minnesota.

In the private communications, Marshall reportedly claimed that offensive coordinator Jason Beck told the team's tight ends that they were not valuable to the offense. Marshall also suggested that the team's struggles against blitz defenses stemmed from repetitive play-calling, specifically mentioning "different versions of the power read on every play." He further defended quarterback Bryce Underwood but identified Beck as "a problem."

Following the circulation of the messages on social media, Marshall took to X, formerly Twitter, to express his regret. "Last weekend, in the hours after we lost, I made some inappropriate comments that I regret," Marshall wrote. "The game is won and lost as a team, and I pointed fingers instead of taking accountability. I let my frustrations speak for me in an emotional moment. I apologize to my teammates and coaches for the unnecessary drama that this has caused."

The Wolverines are currently 3-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play as they head into a matchup against Penn State. Under head coach Kyle Whittingham, in his first season, Michigan's offense ranks among the lowest in the nation in scoring, at 105th, and yards per game, at 122nd.

Whittingham acknowledged the offensive struggles after the 20-14 defeat to Minnesota, describing the team's performances as "unacceptable." He also indicated that "some tough decisions" might be forthcoming.
