A Michigan father, Jeffery Smerer, 45, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his 17-year-old son, Kayleb, and the critical injury of his two younger children, Bentley, 13, and Kinzley, 12. The sentencing took place on Monday, stemming from a shooting incident on September 11, 2025.
Smerer had previously pleaded guilty in May to one count of open murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse, and five counts of felony firearm use. Authorities stated that the shooting occurred on the same day Smerer was scheduled to be sentenced for a misdemeanor indecent exposure charge. In that prior case, Smerer reportedly exposed himself to a child at a daycare his family operated in 2020.
Following the shooting, Smerer told police he had planned a murder-suicide, fearing he might go to jail for the indecent exposure charge. He reportedly ingested multiple medications and attempted to use a .380 handgun after slicing his wrist, but survived. He then proceeded to shoot his three children. Smerer claimed his pistol jammed when he attempted to end his own life. His wife, Brandi, and his 19-year-old son, who were present in the home, disarmed him.
Kayleb died from his injuries at a local hospital. Bentley sustained severe facial injuries, including shattered cheekbones, his upper jaw, and nasal area. Kinzley underwent facial reconstruction surgery and was left paralyzed from the shoulders down. In an update provided in January, Kayleb's mother, Brandi, stated that Bentley had been released from the hospital and had returned to school. Kinzley was continuing with physical and occupational therapy, showing significant strength, with some movement returning to her right arm, though her left arm required casting for ongoing treatment.
The surviving siblings spoke in court during the sentencing. The 19-year-old son described his younger brother, Kayleb, as their father's "favorite" child and recounted how the morning began ordinarily before their father shot Kayleb on the couch. Bentley told his father, "You crippled my sister, you killed my brother - your own children that you loved your entire life, just to kill." He added, "You deserve everything coming to you."
Detectives testified that Smerer stated he shot Bentley while the boy was on his cellphone, aiming towards the "glow." He reported firing at Kinzley as she was getting up, aiming for her throat. Smerer's stated reason for targeting the children was that he was closest to Kayleb and Kinzley, and Kinzley was close to Bentley. His plan, he told police, was to take all three children with him before shooting himself.
Smerer's attorney acknowledged the profound horror of the events and the irreparable damage to the family. He noted that Smerer accepted responsibility and did not attempt to blame others. The judge remarked that Smerer's guilty plea avoided a lengthy and difficult trial, which likely would have resulted in the same outcome, a positive aspect for the victims.
