A murder-suicide involving a father, his wife, and their six children occurred Friday morning in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, authorities reported. The incident concluded with the family's $750,000 home being set ablaze.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, is believed to have shot and killed his wife, Amanda, 39, and their children, aged five to 15, before starting several fires within the residence. He then died by suicide, according to investigators. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office has ruled the deaths of the mother and children as homicides and Karolkiewicz's death as a suicide. The exact cause of the fires remains under investigation by Michigan State Police arson investigators.
Karolkiewicz had been terminated from his position as Vice President of sales and marketing with the American Heart Association earlier in July, the organization confirmed. No specific reasons for his dismissal were provided.
Among the victims were four biological children of Karolkiewicz and two adopted children. The children included four boys, aged 15, 12, 11, and five, and two 11-year-old daughters. The family's pets also perished in the fire.

Earlier reports indicated that Karolkiewicz had a history of infidelity, including an affair approximately six years prior with an intern at a former employer. His wife, Amanda, had detailed the impact of this affair in since-unearthed Reddit posts. She described the affair as destructive to their marriage, which had begun in 2009 when they met while she was interning at a company where Kristopher worked.
