A man killed his wife and six children before setting their Grand Haven Township, Michigan, home on fire and then taking his own life, authorities said. The tragedy unfolded eight years after the wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, detailed marital issues stemming from an emotional affair her husband, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, had with a younger intern.

Police found Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda, 39, and their six children, aged five to 15, dead in their home on Friday morning. Investigators determined Kristopher shot his wife and children before starting multiple fires and then shooting himself. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office has ruled the deaths a homicide and Kristopher's death a suicide. The cause of the blazes remains under investigation by Michigan State Police arson investigators.

Kristopher's affair occurred about eight years prior to the incident, according to a series of Reddit posts Amanda shared two years ago. She described their life in Grand Haven as akin to living in a "Hallmark movie," recalling how she met Kristopher when she was an intern and he was older and divorced. She wrote that he was "cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern."

Amanda stated that Kristopher claimed the affair was never physical, but she expressed doubt, noting that "evidence made it all seem like it would be very unlikely that they were never physical." She also mentioned shoving her husband after learning of the affair, describing it as a fight-or-flight response to what she felt was mental destruction.

The couple sought therapy, both individually and as a couple. Amanda noted that Kristopher reacted intensely to a counselor's questions, becoming angry and self-critical, which she found discouraging for their progress. Despite these challenges, she wrote that they had made positive strides, adapting a lifestyle of sobriety and working through their issues.

In her posts, Amanda detailed her ongoing struggles with feeling "safety" in the relationship due to Kristopher's defensiveness when she expressed her triggers. She expressed happiness with her life overall but acknowledged it remained a "fight to stay in a healthy place."

Four of the six children were Kristopher's biological children, while the other two were adopted. The children ranged in age from five to 15. Four were boys, and two were girls. The family pets also died from smoke inhalation.

Amanda was a teacher at Peach Plains Elementary, and her youngest child was set to begin kindergarten there. Their eldest, 15, was entering high school and had recently started driver's education. Kristopher had recently become unemployed after his position at the American Heart Association ended earlier this month. He had served as the organization's national vice president of sales and marketing since September 2023, primarily working remotely.
