A man in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, killed his wife, six children, and himself before setting their home on fire, authorities have determined. The incident occurred on a Friday morning, when Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children, ranging in age from five to 15, were discovered deceased in their residence. Police stated that Kristopher shot Amanda and the children before initiating multiple fires throughout the house and then taking his own life.

Unveiling Past Marital Strife

About eight years before the fatal event, Kristopher engaged in an emotional affair with a significantly younger intern at his workplace, according to a series of Reddit posts made by Amanda two years prior. Amanda, who described her life in Grand Haven as resembling a "Hallmark movie," recounted meeting Kristopher when she was also an intern. She noted that he was divorced and older than her at the time.

"Fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern," she wrote on Reddit. Amanda detailed a period of distress following the discovery of the affair, stating she ultimately decided to try and salvage the marriage for the sake of their six children. "I kept telling myself, 'I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now.' They have no idea — I faked it 'till we made it," she posted. "We're in a much better place 4.5 years out, but it's still a fight to stay in a healthy place."

Kristopher maintained that the affair was not physical, a claim Amanda said she did not entirely believe, citing evidence that made a non-physical relationship seem unlikely. She admitted to shoving her husband after learning of the affair, an act she described as a fight-or-flight response to feeling mentally violated. The couple subsequently attended individual therapy and marriage counseling.

Amanda wrote that Kristopher reacted intensely to a counselor’s question, becoming angry and defensive. She expressed discouragement about their progress due to his sensitivity to correction. Despite these challenges, Amanda noted that they had adopted a lifestyle of sobriety and that she was generally happy with her life, though she still struggled with feeling emotionally safe due to his defensiveness.

Details of the Deceased

Authorities confirmed that Amanda and her children's deaths were ruled a homicide, while Kristopher's death was classified as a suicide. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office indicated that Kristopher is believed to have been responsible for the killings before setting the fires. The exact cause of the fires remains undetermined, with Michigan State Police arson investigators examining the scene. Of the six children, four were Kristopher's biological children, and the other two were adopted. The family's pets also perished in the fire.

Amanda was a teacher at Peach Plains Elementary, and her youngest child was set to begin kindergarten there. Her oldest child, aged 15, was preparing for high school and had recently started driver's education. Amanda had recently returned to the workforce as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools after previously being a stay-at-home mother.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz had recently become unemployed after his position at the American Heart Association ended earlier this month. He had served as the organization's national vice president of sales and marketing since September 2023, working remotely. The American Heart Association issued a statement expressing devastation and offering condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Kristopher's affair reportedly occurred before he began his employment with the nonprofit.
