Michelle Obama has ignited a debate online after sharing her feelings about her daughters, Malia and Sasha, no longer living at home. On a recent episode of her podcast, In My Own Mind (IMO), Obama confessed that she does not miss her two daughters, who are now 28 and 25 years old.
"I don't miss 'em," Obama said during a conversation with her brother and podcast co-host Craig Robinson and guest Jon Stewart. She clarified, "I love them, I'm going to see them tonight for dinner." However, she added, "Barack cried when they went to college and I was like, 'Bye...'". She explained that her Friday nights are no longer consumed by worry about her daughters' whereabouts, and she appreciates their independence.
The podcast episode, released on August 26, touched upon the challenges of parenting young children while managing demanding careers and the experience of children leaving home. Obama noted that she has had "so much quality time" with her daughters and feels she knows them "inside and out."
Obama's remarks, which went viral on social media platform X, prompted varied reactions from parents. Some users expressed disbelief, with former The View co-host Meghan McCain stating she would have a "nervous breakdown" when her own children leave home and that she could "relate less" to Obama's sentiments. Other users shared similar feelings, with one commenting, "I wish she would move back in! I miss her so much!"
However, many users defended Obama's perspective. They suggested that feelings about children leaving home can evolve as parents adapt to their children's independence. One commenter noted, "The sooner you are able to let them free, the faster they grow independent. People experience and give love differently." Another user advised critics to "wait ten to 12 years" before judging, suggesting that the experience of parenting changes over time.

This is not the first time Obama has spoken about the transition to an empty nest. In a previous appearance on The Jay Shetty Podcast, she mentioned being in therapy to help navigate this new phase of life. She described it as a "tune-up" for her sixties, a time when her choices are entirely her own, without the previous demands of her children, husband, or public service.
Malia Obama graduated from Harvard in 2021 and has since pursued a career in Hollywood, with her directorial debut, The Heart, released in 2024. Sasha Obama graduated from the University of Southern California in 2023. The family was last seen together in June at the opening of The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
