Michelle Obama has responded to criticism following her appearance on Jon Stewart's podcast, where she stated she does not miss her adult daughters, Malia and Sasha, living at home. Obama told Stewart that she enjoys having her schedule back and is "good" as her daughters have moved out.
Her remarks, made on the "IMO" podcast, have drawn criticism from some conservative commentators. Elizabeth Barcohana, a California Republican Party Delegate, suggested Obama's comments conveyed resentment rather than exhaustion, a sentiment she finds particularly concerning amid national discussions on motherhood. Matt Walsh, a conservative commentator, accused Obama of being a "narcissist" for appearing eager for her children to leave home, despite the perceived advantages of her family's wealth.
Obama contrasted her reaction to that of her husband, former President Barack Obama, who reportedly cried when their daughters left for college. "I don’t miss them. I don’t. I love them. I’m going to see them tonight for dinner. I love them," Obama said on the podcast. "But Barack cried when they went to college. I was like, ‘Bye, little— goodbye.’ Now I— now Friday nights aren’t wrecked with terror and fear about, ‘Where are you? Where are you?’"
Obama further explained her perspective by emphasizing the extensive time she dedicated to actively raising her daughters. "I have had so much quality time with my children. So much. Yeah, yeah. I know them inside and out," she stated. She also noted that she enjoys her current schedule, describing it as "all mine."
In the past, Obama has spoken about the deliberate efforts made by both her and former President Obama to prioritize their daughters during his time in office. She highlighted the importance of carving out time for their daughters during their formative years throughout his presidency.
