Michael Sheen's 'House of Games' Debut Sparks Debate Among Viewers
Fans compare the new host to predecessor Richard Osman, with opinions divided on whether Sheen's hosting style matches the show's established humor.
Michael Sheen has stepped into the role of host for the BBC's "House of Games," a move that has elicited a divided response from viewers. Since his debut on Monday, social media has been abuzz with comparisons to the show's previous host, Richard Osman, with many suggesting that Sheen lacks the humor that made Osman a fan favorite.
Sheen, known for his role in "Celebrity Traitors," took his place in the red chair alongside contestants Andi Peters, Stephen Mangan, Shona McGarty, and Nina Wadia. His appearance follows Osman's announcement in March that he would be stepping down after nine years to concentrate on his writing and other presenting endeavors.
The popular quiz format, which challenges four contestants to test their general knowledge daily, with a weekly champion crowned, has seen a mixed reaction to the new leadership. While some viewers have welcomed Sheen to the show, others have expressed on platforms like X that the program has lost its comedic edge.
Comments on social media ranged from critiques such as, "Should’ve got a comedian to replace Richard. #houseofgames feels like it’s lost the humour now and is a bit dull," to more positive remarks like, "Unlike the new #Strictly presenters the beeb seem to have nailed the House of Games new presenter, love Michael Sheen in that chair!" Some acknowledged Osman's impact, with one user stating, "Few people are truly irreplaceable on a show, but Richard Osman is, Michael Sheen is very good but it’s just not the same."
Benji Wilson of The Telegraph's review noted that Sheen "lacks Richard's stature" for the role, describing his first episode as a "masterclass in circumspection" where he adopted a "first, do no harm" approach, performing minimal actions beyond reading questions and smiling at guests.
Richard Osman, speaking on his podcast "The Rest is Entertainment," shared his thoughts on Sheen taking over. He indicated that the show would evolve under Sheen's direction, with merchandise featuring Sheen's face and the program potentially being referred to as "Michael Sheen’s House of Games." Osman expressed delight in Sheen's appointment, stating, "We all want everyone to know how delighted we are Michael’s doing it. So there’s a continuation." He added his belief that Sheen would "have an absolute ball."
Osman also addressed the possibility of returning as a contestant, suggesting it would be "too meta" in the near future but that he would "love to" return in a few years. He concluded by wishing Sheen "such luck," emphasizing the show's fun nature and the "lovely gang" involved, calling it a "great show for him and he’s a great host for it."
In addition to his "House of Games" duties, Michael Sheen is participating in the new series of "Celebrity Traitors" as a Faithful.
"House of Games" airs on weekdays at 6 p.m. on BBC Two.
