Michael Robinson's Apology for Jalen Hurts Comments Met with Skepticism
NFL Network analyst faces backlash for questioning Eagles quarterback's injury, with fans deeming his apology insufficient.
NFL Network analyst Michael Robinson has drawn further criticism for his on-air remarks about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts' health, particularly after his attempt to apologize fell short for many.
Days before it was publicly disclosed that Hurts was dealing with a serious blood clot in his lungs that would sideline him for the remainder of the season, Robinson speculated on air that Hurts might be using the injury as an excuse to disengage from a difficult season. "If I'm Jalen Hurts or anybody in Jalen Hurts' camp, I'm saying, 'Well, if everybody's hurt, I'm hurt, too.' To me, it looked like Jalen is kind of getting himself out of the fray so that this lost season... he's pulling himself out so that this doesn't look like it's on me," Robinson said.
Following the revelation of Hurts' condition, Robinson issued an apology via his social media account, stating, "I want to sincerely apologize to Jalen Hurts, his family, the Philadelphia Eagles organization and fan base for my comments last Thursday. They were unfounded and I never should've speculated on a health issue of a player nor his commitment to his team."
However, the apology was met with skepticism from many fans who felt it was insincere and should have been delivered on air rather than on social media. "You said the comments on TV, so state your apology the next time you're on TV," one user commented on X, formerly Twitter. Another critic stated, "You genuinely do not have enough brain cells to be on national television discussing anyone’s medical condition. What an unbelievably stupid thing to say."
Hurts' health issues began on October 8, when he reported calf pain after being stepped on during a game. Two days later, while in London, he was diagnosed with superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf. Despite this, he was cleared to play in the subsequent game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which the Eagles lost. Following an ultrasound on October 16, doctors discovered movement in the clot, leading to his official ruling out for the game against the Carolina Panthers.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni addressed the situation on Monday, defending the team's medical staff. "The health of our players is always at the forefront of our minds, and we leave that up to the medical experts, but we always, always care deeply about our players," Sirianni said. "When you are completely focused on togetherness and connection, you're always thinking about the well-being of your guys, and that's where we were in that situation."
Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, confirmed that the quarterback has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, indicating blood clots in his lungs. He is currently stable, receiving treatment with blood thinners, and is expected to return after completing his course of medication. He will remain with the team and focus on his conditioning during his recovery.
