Michael McDonald's Long-Lost Son Discovers Fatherhood and Family in Unexpected Reunion

Michael Goessling, a 58-year-old resident of St. Louis, has discovered that his biological father is Michael McDonald, the Grammy-winning singer known for his work with the Doobie Brothers. The revelation came after Goessling's biological mother, who had been searching for him for decades, contacted him through an attorney in May 2025.

Goessling, who knew he was adopted, had no prior knowledge of his biological parents' identities. His adoption was closed, leaving him with no information about his origins. The initial contact from his biological mother led to a series of discoveries that he described as a "tsunami."

During his first phone call with his biological father, Goessling was unaware of his identity. McDonald mentioned he was a musician and would be performing in St. Louis soon. When Goessling checked the concert schedule and saw The Doobie Brothers were playing, the pieces began to fall into place. He directly asked McDonald if he was the singer, to which McDonald confirmed. Goessling expressed disbelief, recalling, "I thought I was being punked for a second."

Further adding to the surreal nature of the discovery, Goessling revealed he had been an unwitting fan of his biological father's music for years. He had unknowingly attended two Doobie Brothers concerts in the 1980s and early 1990s, listening to his father perform without knowing their connection. He even recalled a childhood memory of questioning the band's sound after McDonald joined, not recognizing the new voice.

McDonald, 77, had intentionally remained in the background to allow his biological mother and son to have their reunion first. Goessling met his biological mother for lunch on his 58th birthday, 58 years to the day after his birth. He expressed his gratitude to both parents, telling his mother, "I just want you to hear from me that I got nothing but love for you. This is such an amazing gift, that I get to thank you personally."

Goessling's adoptive parents, Paul and Kay Goessling, raised him in a loving home alongside three adopted siblings and one biological sister. He described his upbringing as "charmed" and said he could not have chosen better parents. His adoptive father, Paul, passed away in late 2024. Kay Goessling, his adoptive mother, embraced the news of the reunion, calling it a "miracle" and expressing eagerness to meet his biological mother.

Reflecting on his adoption, Goessling, who was adopted through Catholic Charities, emphasized its positive impact on his life. He stated that his parents taught him to view his adoption not as a sign of being unwanted, but as a profound blessing and a gift. He hopes his story can help "elevate the narrative" surrounding adoption.

"Adoption has been absolutely nothing but a blessing for me. … I celebrate adoption and I always have. It’s always been a big part of my life story," Goessling said.

He now speaks with McDonald regularly, calling their relationship "heartwarming" and noting the natural similarities that have emerged between them, even leading McDonald's wife and daughter to comment on his mannerisms echoing the singer's.

"My cup overflows," Goessling stated, reflecting on the expansion of his family and the profound connections he has made.
