Michael McDonald Reconnects With Son Given Up for Adoption 58 Years Ago
The Doobie Brothers singer met his biological son, Michael Goessling, after a DNA test revealed their connection.
Michael McDonald, the acclaimed singer for The Doobie Brothers, has recently reconnected with his son, Michael Goessling, who was given up for adoption 58 years ago. The reunion came about after Goessling learned of his biological father's identity through a DNA test.
Goessling, now 58, discovered his connection to the musician when his half-brother, Dylan, took a 23andMe DNA test. Within days, Dylan was notified of a half-brother named Michael Goessling in St. Louis. This revelation initiated the process of reconnecting the family.
McDonald and Goessling's birth mother conceived their son when they were just 14 years old. Consequently, Goessling was adopted by Paul and Kay Goessling, who provided him with a loving upbringing. He expressed deep gratitude for his adoptive parents, stating, "I could not pick two finer folks to raise me."
Goessling spoke with his birth mother on his 58th birthday and subsequently connected with McDonald. Their initial conversations were over the phone, during which McDonald revealed his career as a musician. "In fact, looks like we’ll be touring this summer and we’ll be stopping in St. Louis," McDonald told Goessling, leading to the question, "Are you Michael McDonald?" to which the singer replied, "Yeah, I’m afraid so."
McDonald, 74, shared that he and his wife, Amy Holland, had always wondered about their son's well-being. "Our greatest fear was, how did life treat him? I always carried that guilt with me," McDonald admitted. He expressed relief and happiness that Goessling had a good life, acknowledging that he might not have been able to provide the same opportunities at the time. "The real rock stars in this story are his adoptive parents," he added.
Upon meeting in person, McDonald described a warm embrace from his son. "When he first saw me, he put his arms out, gave me a big old bear hug and told me he loved me, and I told him the same," Goessling recounted.
McDonald, who also has a son Dylan, 37, and a daughter Scarlett, 34, with his wife, expressed his joy at becoming a grandfather through Goessling's family. He praised his "daughter-in-law" and grandchildren as "the greatest kids you’d ever meet."
McDonald rose to prominence in the music industry, first with Steely Dan in 1974 and then joining The Doobie Brothers in 1975. He is scheduled to tour with the band in October, with performances planned across the Southeast.
The singer also reflected on the positive outcome of the situation, noting, "I think it’s an amazing tribute to the fact that adoption is a wonderful option."
