Michael J. Fox was recognized with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2026 Emmy Awards for his dedication to Parkinson's disease advocacy and research. The award, presented by the Television Academy and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, honors individuals in the television industry whose philanthropic efforts have had a significant societal impact.
Fox attended the ceremony with his wife, Tracy Pollan, marking their first appearance at the Emmy Awards in 13 years. Upon taking the stage to accept the award, Fox received a standing ovation from the audience.
During his acceptance speech, Fox reflected on his Parkinson's diagnosis, which he received in 1991 at the age of 29. He publicly disclosed his condition in 1998. "Initially, I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret," Fox shared. "I worried that it would affect my work and my relationship with audiences. Would they laugh if they knew I was sick? And then I was stunned by the support I got. The support from all of you. It was so uplifting. It made me feel like I could keep doing this and I hadn’t lost what I do and they couldn’t take this away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me, and I really appreciate it."
Fox also spoke about the progress being made by his foundation, expressing optimism that researchers are "close" to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease.
The actor's recognition prompted reactions on social media, with users praising his resilience and advocacy. One user on X wrote, "Michael J. Fox ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏We can all learn so much from him…🙏🏻👍." Another commented on his role in raising awareness, stating, "I really do think we underestimate how much Michael J Fox really put Parkinson’s ‘on the map’ so to speak. I knew about it as a little kid because of him and his advocacy for it." A third user described Fox as an inspiration, noting, "Michael J. Fox is an inspiration. The guy got dealt an awful hand."
