Michael Flatley Mourns Wife Niamh at Funeral Service

Michael Flatley, the acclaimed dancer and choreographer, arrived for the funeral service of his wife, Niamh, on Saturday. He was accompanied by their 19-year-old son, Michael St James, at the ceremony held at the Church of St. Therese in Mount Merrion, near Dublin.

Flatley, 68, announced his wife's death earlier in the week, sharing a heartfelt statement on Instagram. Niamh passed away at the Beacon Hospital in Dublin following a period of illness, according to her representative. No specific cause of death has been publicly disclosed.

In his Instagram post, Michael Flatley described his profound grief, stating, "My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend. My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven."

He further shared, "She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her. Thank you for all the love and kindness you have shown us. Please keep Niamh, Michael St James, and our family in your thoughts and prayers."

According to the Irish Independent, Niamh had been unwell for several years and was reportedly hours away from being flown to the United States for specialist treatment. Reports indicate Michael Flatley dedicated significant time to caring for his wife during her illness.

A representative for Flatley expressed the family's "sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Beacon Hospital who cared for Niamh over the past few weeks, and to everyone who has offered their kindness and support to the family."

Friends described Flatley as "left distraught, devastated and utterly grief stricken."

Niamh Flatley was a professional dancer herself, beginning her performing career at age three. She achieved significant recognition in Irish dancing, placing fourth in the World Irish Dancing Championships at 17. She later became a professional performer, participating in the original "Riverdance" production, including its notable 1994 Eurovision interval performance. She also performed in Michael Flatley's productions such as "Feet of Flames" and "Celtic Tiger," and played the lead role of Saoirse in "Lord of the Dance."

Michael and Niamh's romantic relationship began in 2006, and they married later that year. Their son, Michael Saint James, was born in 2007. In a 2013 interview, Michael Flatley referred to his wife as his "best friend," praising her intelligence, beauty, and loyalty.

He previously spoke about Niamh's unwavering support during his battle with cancer, recounting a difficult hospital experience where her presence and courage made a profound impact on him.

Among the attendees at the funeral service were Irish actor and singer Patrick Bergin and Riverdance star Padraic Moyles.
