Michael Flatley Mourns Death of Wife Niamh at 52

Performer Michael Flatley announced the death of his wife, Niamh, on Monday. The couple, who met through the dance world, had been together for 20 years before her passing in Dublin after an illness.

Flatley, 68, described Niamh as his "best friend" and "soulmate," crediting her "courage" for supporting him through a cancer battle and his earlier "partying ways."

Niamh, who was an accomplished Irish dancer in her own right, first met Flatley on the set of Riverdance in 1993. She competed at an elite level as a teenager, placing fourth in the World Irish Dancing Championships at age 17. She later performed professionally in shows such as Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger, and played the lead role of Saoirse in "Lord of the Dance."

Their romantic relationship began after a Christmas party in 2005, with Flatley noting that "something just clicked" and that he realized he loved her in that moment. They married in 2006, and their son, Michael Saint James, was born in 2007.

Flatley has previously spoken about how starting a family with Niamh helped him turn his life around from a period of heavy partying and a "bachelor life." He recounted instances where she would help him home safely after nights out, demonstrating her unwavering support.

Niamh also stood by Flatley during significant health challenges. He was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2003 and underwent surgery for an aggressive form of cancer in January 2023. He recalled an instance where, in extreme pain during hospitalization, he opened his eyes to see his wife smiling, highlighting her strength and courage.

Their 20-year marriage was also tested by other turbulent times, including a lawsuit filed against Flatley in 2023 by entertainment firm Switzer Consulting Ltd for an alleged breach of contract regarding his "Lord of the Dance" tour. Earlier in his career, in 2002, he was falsely accused of rape, which led to a lengthy legal battle that concluded with the accuser being ordered to pay Flatley damages for extortion, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and defamation.

Niamh was reportedly ill for several years, and Michael spent significant time caring for her. She was hospitalized at Beacon Hospital in Dublin. A representative stated that the family is grateful for the care provided by the hospital staff.

Flatley shared the news of his wife's passing on Instagram, posting a series of photographs and a statement expressing his heartbreak. "My heart is broken," he wrote. "I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend. My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven."

Niamh and Michael were last publicly seen together in August, attending Michael Smurfit's 90th birthday celebration in Monaco. Despite her illness, she remained involved in his touring productions.
