Performer Michael Flatley announced the death of his wife, Niamh, on Monday. The couple, who shared a 20-year marriage, were together for a significant part of their lives before her passing in Dublin after an illness. Flatley, 68, frequently spoke of his deep devotion to Niamh, calling her his "best friend" and "soulmate."

Their relationship began after years of friendship. Flatley recounted a moment at a 2005 Christmas party where he realized their connection was more profound than friendship. "Something just clicked," he stated. "Looking back, I think I realised I loved her in that moment. I caught her eye and she took my breath away."

By 2006, their relationship had deepened, leading to their marriage in Fermoy, County Cork. Their son, Michael Saint James, was born in 2007. The wedding was a large affair, with approximately 250 guests attending.

Niamh Flatley, originally from County Meath, was an accomplished Irish dancer herself. She competed at an elite level as a teenager, placing fourth in the World Irish Dancing Championships at age 17. She later became a professional performer, appearing in the original Riverdance production, including the notable 1994 Eurovision interval performance. She also performed in Flatley's productions like "Feet of Flames" and "Celtic Tiger," and originated the lead role of Saoirse in "Lord of the Dance." The couple first met in 1993 on the set of Riverdance.

Flatley has credited Niamh with helping him navigate difficult periods in his life, including his past struggles with partying and a battle with cancer. He described her "courage" in nursing him through his health issues. In 2013, he told Piers Morgan, "She is highly intelligent. She is my best friend. She is extraordinarily beautiful, inside and out. I am proud to be her husband. I am blessed to have her. She is a loyal true blue."

He also spoke about how fatherhood and his marriage to Niamh transformed his life. "Five years ago, when 6am rolled round, I was just getting the key in the front door from a big night out," he told the Daily Mail in 2009. "I was on the road all the time, chasing women, out drinking with my buddies and living the bachelor life. Now 6am comes and Michael is jumping on my tummy shouting at me to rebuild the track for Thomas the Tank Engine."

Niamh's support extended through legal challenges Flatley faced, including a breach of contract lawsuit in early 2024 related to his "Lord of the Dance" tour, and a false accusation of rape in 2002 that led to a lengthy legal battle.

Flatley announced Niamh's death via Instagram, sharing photographs of her and writing, "My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend. My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven."

A representative confirmed her passing at Beacon Hospital in Dublin, stating she died "following a period of illness." The specific cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Niamh had reportedly been unwell for several years, and was at one point scheduled for specialist treatment in the U.S.

Michael and Niamh were last publicly seen together in August at the 90th birthday celebration of Michael Smurfit in Monaco. The family has expressed gratitude for the care provided by the staff at Beacon Hospital and for the outpouring of support from friends and fans.
