Michael Douglas Reveals How Firing His Father Kirk from 'Dream Role' Caused Decade-Long Feud
Douglas recounts the painful decision to cast Jack Nicholson over his father, Kirk, in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and the subsequent Oscar night snub.
Michael Douglas has detailed the reasons behind the years-long estrangement from his father, Kirk Douglas, stemming from a pivotal casting decision in the 1975 film 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.'
In his memoir, 'One Helluva Ride,' Michael Douglas, 82, explained that their relationship became severely strained after he produced the critically acclaimed film. Kirk Douglas had long harbored a desire to play the role of Randle McMurphy, viewing it as a potential career revival and an opportunity to win an Academy Award. Despite his efforts, Kirk had been unable to get the book adapted for the screen.
Michael Douglas, transitioning from acting to producing, took on the project with the initial understanding that his father would star. However, he partnered with Saul Zaentz, who insisted that Kirk, then in his mid-fifties, was too old for the part. Despite Michael's strong advocacy for his father, both Zaentz and the chosen director, Miloš Forman, deemed Kirk too aged for the role. Jack Nicholson, then 38, was ultimately cast and went on to win the Best Actor Oscar for his performance.
Douglas described the moment he had to inform his father of the casting decision as one of the most difficult of his life. "I told him that the financier felt that he was too old and could no longer play the role," Michael wrote. "I saw a flash of my father's rage, and then he was silent. Just as I feared, dad blamed me. He said that I had betrayed him. I was crushed."
The rift deepened when 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' swept the Academy Awards in 1976, winning Best Picture. Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz accepted the award, but Michael neglected to thank his father during his acceptance speech, despite acknowledging others. Reflecting on the moment, Douglas admitted, "The fact that I forgot his name that night broke my heart." He also suggested a subconscious desire to claim credit for the production, given his father's initial involvement with the book.
Kirk Douglas, an icon of Old Hollywood known for roles in films like 'Detective Story,' 'Paths of Glory,' and 'Spartacus,' was nominated for three Academy Awards but never won. He passed away in February 2020 at the age of 103.
The father-son relationship began to mend in the 1990s. Michael attributed a significant shift in his father's perspective to a serious helicopter crash in 1991 that left Kirk injured. "It dramatically changed him — from an actor desperate to find his next role, into a more reflective person who embraced his Jewish roots, his family, and his legacy," Michael wrote. "All of us in the family knew he had become a much better man after being given his second chance."
Kirk Douglas is buried in Westwood, California, beside his second wife, Anne Buydens. His first marriage was to actress Diana Dill, with whom he had Michael in 1944.
