Michael Douglas Recounts 'Heartbreaking' Conversations with Rob Reiner About Sons' Addiction
In his new memoir, Douglas shares the profound impact of discussing his son Cameron's struggles with Reiner, whose own son, Nick, was later accused of murder.
Michael Douglas, in his upcoming memoir "One Helluva Ride," reveals the deeply personal and challenging conversations he shared with director Rob Reiner about their sons' battles with drug addiction. The "Wall Street" star described these discussions as "heartbreaking" but ultimately found solace in their shared experiences during difficult family times.
Douglas, 82, recounted in the memoir, as excerpted by the Los Angeles Times, that he and Reiner both confided in each other about being "at the end of our rope" as they navigated their sons' serious drug issues. Douglas's son, Cameron Douglas, 47, has publicly struggled with addiction and served a federal prison sentence on drug-related charges.
The friendship between Douglas and Reiner, who collaborated on the 1994 film "The American President," took on a tragic dimension following the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner in December 2025. Los Angeles police determined the couple were victims of homicide, and their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested the same day. Prosecutors allege Nick Reiner fatally stabbed his parents and have indicted him on charges including murder with special-circumstance allegations.
Douglas had previously spoken about his bond with Reiner and their discussions regarding their sons' struggles during a CBS News special after the director's death.
"One Helluva Ride," which spans nearly 500 pages, chronicles Douglas's career, family life, and personal experiences. The memoir also includes his recent admission of a past secret relationship with his "Romancing the Stone" co-star Kathleen Turner, an affair they had both previously denied for decades.
