Michael Douglas Recounts Drunken Threat to Julia Roberts Over Son at Golden Globes Party

Michael Douglas has shared an anecdote from his memoir, "One Helluva Ride," detailing an instance where he drunkenly threatened actress Julia Roberts at a Golden Globes party.

According to Douglas's account, the incident occurred around 1990 when Roberts was filming the movie "Flatliners," a project for which Douglas served as a producer. Douglas had brought his then-13-year-old son, Cameron, to the party. Douglas described seeing Roberts with her arm around his son at the bar.

"To me, in that moment, he looked stunned…but I was pretty drunk," Douglas wrote. He then confronted Roberts, saying, "Take your hands off my son and take that Golden Globe and stick it where the sun don’t shine."

The following morning, Douglas's producing partner informed him about the incident. Douglas acknowledged in his memoir that he had "crossed a line with the most in-demand young actress in Hollywood." To make amends, he sent Roberts a bouquet of roses with an apology note and also apologized in person to both Roberts and her then-fiancé, Kiefer Sutherland, who starred alongside Roberts in "Flatliners."

Douglas stated that while they were able to finish the film and he remained friends with Sutherland, his relationship with Roberts did not recover to the same extent.

A spokesperson for Roberts did not respond to requests for comment.

The memoir also touches on other aspects of Douglas's career and personal life, including a past affair with Kathleen Turner during the filming of "Romancing the Stone." Douglas wrote that their relationship began as friends and evolved into a romantic one, with him sneaking into her hotel room after long days of shooting in the jungle. This affair reportedly ended when Douglas's then-wife, Diana Luker, confronted Turner.

Douglas has previously spoken about his struggles with alcohol and substance abuse, entering rehab several years after the incident with Roberts.
