Michael Douglas Recalls 'Heartbreaking Confessional' With Rob Reiner About Sons' Drug Issues

Michael Douglas has shared intimate details of a 'heartbreaking confessional' with director Rob Reiner, discussing the severe drug issues faced by their respective sons. In an excerpt from his autobiography, "One Helluva Ride," published in the Los Angeles Times, Douglas, 82, recounted the comfort he and Reiner found in commiserating over their sons' substance abuse battles.

Douglas's eldest son, Cameron, now 47, has a history of drug addiction, leading to his arrest in 2009 and a seven-year prison sentence. Since his release, Cameron has been sober and authored a book about his experiences. Rob Reiner's son, Nick, has been accused of murdering his parents, Rob and Michele Singer Reiner, whose bodies were discovered in their Los Angeles home in December.

Previously, Rob Reiner had spoken publicly about Nick's struggles with substance abuse, even co-directing the 2015 film "Being Charlie," which was based on his son's experiences. "We both had sons with serious drug issues and we both, at times, had been at the end of our rope," Douglas wrote. "It was a heartbreaking confessional for us, but I know we gave each other some measure of comfort during the hard times."

Douglas and Reiner have a long-standing professional and personal relationship, having collaborated on films such as "The American President" and "And So It Goes."

Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, with special circumstances including multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. He has been held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility for nearly a year. His attorneys are currently seeking access to a trust fund established for him as a baby, arguing that a significant portion of the funds originates from his late grandfather, Carl Reiner, and should not be withheld due to the Slayer Statute. The statute typically prevents a beneficiary from financially benefiting from a death they caused.

For almost a year, Nick Reiner has been locked up in a Los Angeles jail cell following accusations he murdered his filmmaker father Rob and mother Michele Singer

According to court documents, Nick's legal team contends that money left to him by his grandfather, Hollywood legend Carl Reiner, predates any alleged involvement in his parents' deaths and therefore should not be subject to the Slayer Statute. They argue that funds, including at least $325,017.49 transferred to the trust on December 24, 2024, originated from Carl Reiner's estate plan and should be released to Nick. The successor trustee's counsel is reportedly still investigating the source and handling of these funds.

Nick says a 'substantial portion' of his trust comes from his grandfather, the late Carl Reiner (Carl pictured with his son Rob Reiner in 2017)

Douglas's memoir, "One Helluva Ride," was released in the UK.

Cameron Douglas now 47, struggled with drug addiction and was arrested in 2009. He spent seven years in prison, with two in segregated housing and has been sober since his release from jail and penned a book, Long Way Home, in 2019 (Cameron and Michael in 2004)
