Michael Douglas Admits to Affair with Kathleen Turner During 'Romancing the Stone' Filming
The actor revealed the secret relationship in his upcoming memoir, detailing the entanglement while married to his first wife.
Michael Douglas has publicly acknowledged a past affair with actress Kathleen Turner that occurred during the filming of their 1984 hit movie, "Romancing the Stone." The revelation comes from an excerpt of Douglas's forthcoming memoir, "One Helluva Ride," shared by People magazine.
Douglas, 82, stated in the memoir that he became involved with Turner while still married to his first wife, Diandra Luker. He described Turner as "smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice" and admitted to an instant attraction.
According to Douglas, his marriage to Luker was experiencing significant difficulties at the time, and he had also been involved with "Romancing the Stone" screenwriter Diane Thomas prior to his relationship with Turner. He characterized himself as "technically married, but separated" when the affair with Turner began.
"Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship," Douglas confessed. However, the affair reportedly ended when Luker confronted Turner, reminding her of Douglas's marital status.
Douglas reflected on the situation, noting that despite the marital problems with Luker, they had their son, Cameron, to consider. He and Turner parted ways romantically, and Douglas attempted to reconcile with Luker.
Despite the end of their romantic involvement, Douglas and Turner proved to be a successful on-screen pairing. "Romancing the Stone" achieved significant box office success, grossing $115 million. They reunited the following year for the sequel, "The Jewel of the Nile," maintaining a strictly professional relationship. Their collaboration continued with the 1989 film "The War of the Roses," another box office hit.
Luker filed for divorce from Douglas in 1995, concluding their 18-year marriage. Reports indicated she received $45 million and several properties in the settlement.
Douglas met actress Catherine Zeta-Jones in 1999, and they married two years later. They have two children, Dylan and Carys Zeta.
Years later, Douglas and Turner reconnected professionally when Turner joined the cast of Netflix's "The Kominsky Method" in its second season in 2019 and also appeared in the third season in 2021. During promotional efforts for the series, both actors continued to deny rumors of a past romantic relationship, maintaining the secret for four decades.
"One Helluva Ride" is scheduled for release on October 6.
