Michael Carrick Urges Manchester United Players to Show Commitment Amidst Worst Start in 40 Years
Interim manager Michael Carrick acknowledges the pressure and calls for change following Manchester United's dismal performance, challenging his squad to prove their dedication.
Michael Carrick, Manchester United's interim manager, has directly addressed the team's worst start to a league season in four decades, urging his players to demonstrate their commitment and desire to be at the club. Facing mounting pressure after a recent draw with Tottenham, Carrick acknowledged the sentiment for change but emphasized the importance of embracing challenges.
"I love this part," Carrick stated in a press conference. "Sometimes when it's not quite going for you, you see who's really there. You see within the group, the players, the squad, the club, who wants to be here for the long-term and it really means something." He added that supporters are desperate for results and the team must provide them with something to cheer about.
Carrick drew parallels with long-tenured managers like Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, highlighting that building successful teams involves overcoming difficult periods. "I understand when it's not going too well, there's a real clamour and a feeling of 'it's a disaster' and everything needs to be changed. I get that, obviously. But that's certainly not in our mind-set." He expressed belief that the team can work through their current struggles.
Despite the team's poor form, Carrick maintained a positive outlook, stating he does not feel external pressure. "It depends on how you define pressure. I certainly don't look outside or elsewhere for what it should look like. I've felt the ups and I've felt the downs, so I don't feel the pressure from that at all." He characterized his approach as embracing the challenge and being excited about the team's potential.
The club's recent performance has been a cause for concern, with their league start being the worst in 40 years. The situation is compounded by player availability issues. Key midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw were absent from the traveling squad for the match against Atletico Madrid due to injury. Shaw's absence, in particular, highlights a perceived lack of cover at left-back during the summer transfer window.
In attack, the team is reportedly struggling due to the prolonged absence of Benjamin Sesko. The midfield partnership between Youri Tielemans and Mainoo has also faced criticism, with some pundits questioning its ability to control games. The recent introduction of summer signing Carlos Baleba, who made his first minutes for the club after recovering from an ankle injury, offered a glimmer of hope, though his readiness to start in a high-pressure match like the one against Atletico was uncertain.
Carrick acknowledged Baleba's potential contributions, noting he offers something different to the midfield balance. "We know what Carlos can bring," Carrick said. "He gives us something a bit different in the balance of the midfield, so we've got to pick and choose the right things for certain games."
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed respect for Manchester United despite their current struggles. He noted that the team remains strong and cautioned against underestimating them, particularly after Atletico lost to United in a pre-season friendly. Simeone's side is also looking to bounce back from an opening defeat in their own European campaign.
Carrick's challenge to his players comes ahead of a crucial period, with difficult fixtures against Atletico Madrid and a subsequent match at Elland Road looming.
