Michael Carrick to Remain Manchester United Head Coach After Crisis Talks
Under-pressure boss takes training ahead of Chelsea fixture, with club opting against dismissal.
Michael Carrick will continue as Manchester United head coach, with club officials deciding against dismissing him following a day of crisis talks. He is set to remain in charge for the upcoming match against Chelsea on Saturday.
Carrick led a first-team training session at the club's Carrington complex on Tuesday morning, despite significant speculation surrounding his future. He arrived shortly before 8 a.m. in a club tracksuit and oversaw the session as players returned from a day off.
On Monday, Carrick was also present at Carrington, reportedly to watch a behind-closed-doors Under-21s match against Hull City. He was accompanied by assistant manager Steve Holland and Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher. He stayed for approximately three hours before departing with his son, Jacey, who is part of the Under-18s squad.
Carrick's position had been under scrutiny due to the team's performance, having lost half of their 12 games this season. Manchester United has experienced its worst league start in 40 years and has not secured a win in their last eight matches, a streak not seen since 2015.
Following a recent defeat to Bournemouth, Carrick appeared emotional, acknowledging the fans' support while directing criticism towards the Glazers, Ratcliffe, Wilcox, and the players. He had previously suggested he might be saying farewell to supporters, although he later clarified this was not the case. This followed a lengthy address to reporters at a press conference and an apology to travelling fans in Como after a 4-1 loss.
The team has a free week before their Saturday fixture against Chelsea, as they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Brighton and do not have other competitions to contest in the interim.
