The Today show has appointed Michael Atkinson as its new weekday sports presenter, filling the role left by Danika Mason. Atkinson, already known to viewers as a Weekend Today co-host, officially took over the coveted position this week.

However, Atkinson's first day was marred by a significant stumble as he missed the first three sports bulletins on Monday morning. He was observed rushing into the studio over an hour after the show's usual 5:30 a.m. start time. During an on-air segment, co-host Sylvia Jeffreys questioned his tardiness, to which Atkinson humorously responded, "I call this Weekend Today time." He added, "I woke up and I saw cameraman Isaac on [the sport desk] and I thought, this show's in trouble."

Atkinson's appointment follows Danika Mason's emotional farewell last week. Mason announced her departure after two years on the program, citing the challenges of balancing her career with a growing family. She revealed her decision to step down permanently when she returns from maternity leave next year.

"Obviously juggling all my NRL commitments, the Today show and a new baby as well, something had to give," Mason told her co-hosts. "So I have made the pretty tough decision. So, when I return next year, I won't be coming back to the show."

Danika Mason, who is expecting her first child with NRL star Liam Knight, tearfully made her departure announcement on Friday morning

Mason also shared that she plans to remain involved in the sporting world, aiming to cover the NRL next year. She indicated that she would be back for round one in Australia, potentially bringing her unborn daughter along for some on-field reports.

Mason's departure marks another change for the breakfast show, following the exit of longtime weatherman Tim Davies after seven years and former co-host Sarah Abo in September. Earlier this year, Karl Stefanovic also departed the program.
