Micah Richards 'Devastated' by Man City's Premier League Charges

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has voiced deep distress and heartbreak following the Premier League's verdict on the club's alleged financial rule breaches. The league found Manchester City guilty of engaging in a £900 million scheme involving 'sham' contracts between 2009 and 2018, aimed at inflating revenues or reducing costs to circumvent financial regulations.

Richards, who won the Premier League title with City in 2012, shared his emotional response on The Rest is Football podcast. "The reports were troubling. I saw the words which were used by the Premier League in sham contracts and I felt absolutely devastated," he stated. He described his long-standing connection to the club, having been involved since he was 14, and the personal impact of the allegations.

"I’ve been at that club since I was 14 years old, I would die for that club. I achieved my dream at Manchester City, but then to hear these reports, and not only me as an ex-player, but the fans, what they have to go through, absolutely devastating," Richards said. He recounted a conversation with a lifelong fan who was in tears, highlighting the uncertainty and heartbreak the situation has caused.

Richards expressed a mix of sadness, anger, and confusion, acknowledging that City maintains its own side of the story. The implications for the club are significant, with potential sanctions including expulsion from the Premier League and the stripping of titles won during the period in question. City has stated its intention to appeal the verdict.

"There are no winners in this," Richards commented. "If Man City do the appeal and they get off, it’s still going to be tarnished. And, if they’re found guilty after the appeal, what happens then? And it’s not just Man City fans or Man City players, it’s the whole of the Premier League comes into question. This could be something that goes on for years and years and years."

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane offered a stark perspective, suggesting that if he were a City player, he would discard any medals earned during that period. "It’s cheating. You’re hearing nonsense about some ex-players saying, ‘Oh well, they won on the pitch’. Because it was cheating! It was cheating going on," Keane said on ITV.
