Miami Quarterback Darian Mensah Continues Stellar Start with Near-Perfect Performance
The Hurricanes' new starting quarterback has an eye-popping completion rate and multiple touchdown passes through three games.
Miami Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah is making an exceptional case for early Heisman Trophy consideration, demonstrating remarkable accuracy through the first three games of the 2026 season. In Miami's 33-20 victory over Wake Forest on Friday, Mensah completed 30 of 34 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns, bringing his season total to 11 touchdowns with no interceptions.
Mensah's efficiency has been a defining characteristic of his early tenure. Through three games, he has completed 71 of 79 passes, an astounding 90% completion rate. The transfer quarterback, who previously played at Duke after starting at Tulane, was particularly dominant in the first half against Wake Forest. He connected on all 20 of his passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns, helping Miami build a 24-7 lead.
His remarkable streak of consecutive completions extended to 24 before his first incompletion of the night. This extended a larger streak of 35 consecutive completions dating back to Miami's 77-7 win over Florida A&M, when he completed his final 11 passes. This streak of 35 completions falls just one shy of the FBS record of 36 consecutive completions set by East Carolina's Dominique Davis in 2011.
Mensah's season began with a strong performance against Stanford, where he threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns on 27-of-30 passing in a 45-6 victory. He followed that with another impressive outing against Florida A&M, completing 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns.
Wide receiver Malachi Toney has also been a significant contributor for the Hurricanes. Toney recorded 12 receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown against Wake Forest. His season started with a school-record 234 receiving yards and three touchdowns against Stanford, followed by four catches for 96 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown reception, against Florida A&M.
The undefeated No. 5-ranked Hurricanes will host Central Michigan next week as they aim to maintain their perfect record before returning to ACC play.
