Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been moved out of intensive care following surgery for gunshot wounds, head coach Andy Reid announced Wednesday. She is reportedly making progress after being shot twice by her son, Elijah.

Reid confirmed the update after practice, stating, "Update on Mia Bieniemy, she is doing better and great from where she was. Out of the ICU unit and making progress." He added that Eric Bieniemy remains with his wife in Virginia.

Mia Bieniemy sustained gunshot wounds to her left forearm and shoulder, with one projectile traveling across her chest. She reportedly called 911 herself on Sunday night and was experiencing difficulty breathing. Footage from neighbors showed police entering the Bieniemy home in Virginia and later carrying an injured woman from the residence.

Elijah Bieniemy, 27, is currently in police custody without bond. His first court hearing is scheduled for August 31. He has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. Reports indicate he has no prior law enforcement encounters.

Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman stated Monday that the mother had called in the shooting involving her son, and that an investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

Eric Bieniemy was excused indefinitely from his duties with the Chiefs to be with his family. His return to the team in the offseason had been met with excitement by players, including Travis Kelce, who had previously praised Bieniemy's coaching impact.
