Mexico Prison Riot Leaves 10 Dead, 16 Injured

A violent riot at a prison in Mexico's Sinaloa state on Thursday resulted in the deaths of nine inmates and one civilian, with 16 others injured, according to state authorities. The incident occurred at the El Castillo Penitentiary in the port city of Mazatlan during scheduled family visiting hours.

Sinaloa's Public Security Secretariat confirmed the fatalities and injuries via the social media platform X. Local media reports indicated that firearms were used during the clash, though officials have not yet released details on how the deaths occurred. Following the violence, members of the Mexican army, National Guard, navy, and state security forces were deployed to regain control of the facility. The prison, which houses approximately 1,800 inmates, is now reported to be under control by the federal security cabinet.

Analysts suggest that prison overcrowding, exacerbated by the extensive use of pretrial detention, coupled with inadequate staffing, contributes to corruption and violence within Mexico's correctional facilities. This is not the first instance of deadly unrest in the region; a riot at a prison in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa, last May claimed the lives of seven inmates and left another injured.

Mexico operates 276 prisons, including 14 federal penitentiaries and 249 state-run facilities. As of February, the national prison population stood at 261,388, according to official figures.

The state of Sinaloa has been particularly affected by cartel-related violence, with unrest erupting in September 2024. This violence stemmed from an internal power struggle within the Sinaloa Cartel, pitting factions led by the sons of former drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, known as “Los Chapitos,” against supporters of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, another imprisoned former cartel leader.

The riot occurs as the Mexican government faces increased pressure from the United States, particularly from the Trump administration, to intensify its efforts against drug cartels.
