Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Friday she will attend the World Cup final on Sunday, accepting a direct invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump. This marks their first meeting since December, following months of verbal exchanges.
Sheinbaum stated that she decided to attend because of the invitation from the U.S. president. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is also expected to be present. The World Cup final, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will feature Argentina against Spain in New Jersey. Spain's King Felipe VI is also anticipated to attend the match.
Sheinbaum did not attend the World Cup's opening match in Mexico City, where the Mexican national team defeated South Africa 2-0. Instead, she offered her ticket to a young Indigenous woman.
The relationship between Sheinbaum and Trump has been characterized by tensions in areas including security and trade. Their last meeting occurred during the World Cup draw in December.
