Mexico Orders Former Prosecutor to Stand Trial on Treason Charge
A federal judge has ruled that a former state attorney general will face trial after being accused of illegally collaborating with the CIA.
A federal judge in Mexico has ordered former Chihuahua prosecutor César Jáuregui to stand trial on a treason charge, his defense attorney confirmed Sunday.
Jáuregui is accused of launching a joint operation with the CIA to dismantle a drug lab in northern Mexico without informing the federal government. The operation drew national attention after two CIA agents and two state officials died in a car accident while returning from the operation.
Jáuregui was initially arrested on October 17 on charges of illegal exercise of public office. A judge recently ruled he would proceed to trial on those charges. Federal officials subsequently added the treason charge.
Mexico has not successfully prosecuted a treason charge in decades, despite a recent attempt.
