Mexico and Peru have restored diplomatic relations following a period of tension stemming from former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez seeking asylum at the Mexican embassy in November 2025. Chávez has since departed Peru for Mexico.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá confirmed that Chávez was granted safe passage and had left the country. However, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry stated that Peru retains the right to request Chávez's eventual extradition. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed Chávez to Mexico, reaffirming her government's support for former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo.
Castillo was arrested in December 2022 and impeached after attempting to dismiss Peruvian congress members and establish an emergency government. Chávez was imprisoned in June 2023, facing charges related to her alleged involvement in Castillo's plan to dissolve congress. A judge released her on bail in September 2025, at which point she denied the accusations.
In November 2025, both Chávez and Castillo received prison sentences exceeding 11 years. The resumption of diplomatic ties between the two nations occurs shortly after Keiko Fujimori assumed office as the new Peruvian president last week.
