Mets Vie for Gold Gloves, Aim to End Decade-Long Drought
Three finalists vie for individual awards, seeking to break the franchise's 11-year streak without a Gold Glove recipient.
The New York Mets have three players named as finalists for the upcoming Gold Glove Awards, offering a strong chance to end the franchise's 11-year drought without a winner in the prestigious defensive honor. Carson Benge, Luis Torrens, and Nolan McLean are the trio of players in contention for the award, which has not been won by a Mets player since 2014.
Benge, a rookie outfielder, has drawn attention for his strong arm, highlighted by a game in August where he threw out runners at the plate on consecutive plays within the same inning. He led all National League right fielders with 10 assists over the season.
Torrens, recognized as one of the league's top defensive catchers, was also a finalist for the award last year. He maintained a strong defensive performance this season, successfully throwing out 33 percent of runners attempting to steal. According to Statcast, Torrens finished in the 89th percentile for caught stealing above average and in the 85th percentile for blocks.
McLean demonstrated defensive prowess through his agility, committing only one error in 31 starts during the season.
Juan Lagares, a center fielder, was the last Mets player to be awarded a Gold Glove. The franchise has historically seen limited success with the award, with no catcher ever winning the honor. Ron Darling, in 1989, remains the only pitcher in Mets history to have received a Gold Glove.
