The New York Mets, after a 4-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday, took to X to jest with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels over his ongoing dispute with LSU regarding his college jersey number.

"Stopped at 4 out of respect for Jayden Daniels," the Mets posted on the social media platform, referencing the Heisman Trophy winner's issued cease-and-desist letter to LSU. The controversy arose when LSU cornerback DJ Pickett switched from number 3 to number 5, a number he had previously worn and was reportedly promised. Daniels' representation stated he felt "profoundly disrespected" by the decision to allow his jersey number to be reassigned.

Daniels, who led LSU to a 10-3 record in his final collegiate season in 2023 and was the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had an NIL deal with LSU that permitted the university to use his name, image, and likeness for 180 days following his last game in November 2023. His spokesperson indicated the family believed his number would remain a significant part of his legacy at the university.

Despite the situation, Pickett stated he would continue to wear the number he has had since childhood and wished Daniels well. Daniels, currently entering his third year with the Commanders and fresh off an Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2024, acknowledged the complexities of the business of football. He expressed hope for a private resolution between his team and LSU, emphasizing his sole focus remains on his NFL career. "I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved," Daniels said.

The Mets, who have had a season marked by offensive struggles but have won seven of their last ten games, engaged with the online commentary surrounding Daniels' situation, adding to the viral discourse.
