The New York Mets experienced one of their most disheveled losses of the season Tuesday night, falling 16-12 to the Kansas City Royals in a wild opener to their homestand at Citi Field. The defeat, against a team previously in last place, highlighted significant issues with the Mets' pitching staff after they surrendered a five-run lead.
Early Lead Dissipates
The Mets had built a seemingly comfortable five-run advantage by the fourth inning. However, the game unraveled quickly as the Royals scored a dozen unanswered runs. The implosion began in the fifth inning when reliever Austin Warren entered the game and allowed all six batters he faced to reach base, with five scoring to tie the game at 9-9.
The offensive struggles were compounded by a bizarre sequence in the first inning where the Royals were awarded a three-run “Little League homer” due to three Mets errors on a single play. Despite this early advantage for the Royals, the Mets managed to regain the lead later in the game.
bullpen Struggles and Debut Woes
Adding to the night's difficulties, Long Island native Matt Seelinger surrendered seven runs in his Major League debut during the seventh inning, with the game tied. Seelinger's outing included walking Lane Thomas and giving up an RBI double to Salvador Perez, followed by a two-run home run to Nick Loftin.
Earlier, in the second inning, starter Kodai Senga gave up a two-run homer to Tyler Tolbert. Senga later allowed two runs in the fourth inning on a double to Thomas, but the Mets extended their lead in the bottom half of the inning when Juan Soto hit his sixth home run of the season. However, this cushion proved insufficient.
The Mets’ offensive performance saw A.J. Ewing reach base five times and hit his sixth homer of the season. Juan Soto also contributed with his 20th home run.
Coming off two narrow victories in Atlanta, the Mets had hoped to build momentum on their homestand, where they had lost six of their last seven games. Instead, they suffered another significant defeat, extending a pattern of struggles as the team approaches the All-Star break.
