New York Mets owner Steve Cohen addressed the FBI investigation into Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, stating his hope that Walter can navigate the situation.
"It's an investigation, we don't really know exactly where it's going. I hope Mark can figure it out and put it behind him," Cohen told reporters. He added, "The Dodgers are still a strong team, strong revenues, solid process. I think the Dodgers are going to continue to be a good team."
The investigation into Walter centers on alleged fraudulent business transactions involving his insurance companies and other investments. This probe has cast a shadow over the Dodgers, a team known for significant spending to bolster its roster. Cohen, who has also invested heavily in his team's on-field product, highlighted the Dodgers' financial stability and operational strength despite the ongoing inquiry.
The Mets themselves have been active in the offseason, signing Bo Bichette to a three-year, $126 million deal and Devin Williams to a three-year, $51 million contract. The team was also a finalist for Kyle Tucker before the Dodgers secured the free agent.
Walter's business activities have drawn scrutiny, prompting speculation about a potential sale of the Dodgers. He recently sold the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion and divested his shares in Chelsea FC. Such moves have fueled conjecture that Walter might sell the Dodgers to address the federal investigation.
The Dodgers organization has a history with ownership changes following financial difficulties. In 2012, the team was sold by former owner Frank McCourt to Guggenheim Baseball Management, which is led by Walter and Stan Kasten, after McCourt filed for bankruptcy. Under Guggenheim's ownership, the Dodgers have become a dominant force in baseball.
As the Dodgers pursue a third consecutive World Series title, the ongoing investigation into their majority owner introduces a layer of uncertainty for the franchise.
