Mets Consider John Mallee for Hitting Coach Role
The team is reportedly looking at the veteran coach who previously worked with president of baseball operations David Stearns.
The New York Mets are considering John Mallee, an assistant hitting coach with the Chicago Cubs, for a hitting coach position within the organization. Mallee's potential hiring comes as the Mets continue to seek instructional support for their hitting department.
Mallee's previous experience includes a stint as the Houston Astros' hitting coach from 2013 to 2014. During this period, David Stearns, currently the Mets' president of baseball operations, also worked in the Astros' front office, indicating a prior professional connection between the two.
In his initial tenure with the Cubs, Mallee served as hitting coach when the team won the World Series in 2016. He later held hitting coach roles with the Philadelphia Phillies and as an assistant hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels before returning to the Cubs.
The Mets' need for a hitting coach follows the recent dismissal of Jeff Albert, the director of major league hitting, along with two other staff members.
Additionally, former Mets hitting coach Kevin Long was scheduled to interview for a position with the club on Tuesday. Long previously coached Juan Soto during their time with the Washington Nationals, which included a World Series title in 2019. Long was recently let go by the Phillies.
