Richland Parish, Louisiana, is poised to become home to Meta's Hyperion data center, which the tech company announced Monday it is expanding to five gigawatts of computing power, representing an investment of $50 billion. This expansion aims to create the world's largest data center and is projected to be operational by 2030.

Local officials and Governor Jeff Landry have praised the project, citing significant economic benefits. According to Landry, the expansion is expected to generate 7,500 construction jobs, over 1,000 permanent positions, and nearly 1,900 indirect jobs. Since breaking ground in December 2024, Meta has awarded more than $1.6 billion in contracts to Louisiana businesses. The increased tax revenue from the data center has already contributed to teacher bonuses in Richland Parish, reportedly a 400 percent increase from the previous year, which the school district superintendent described as "life-altering."

However, the project has also drawn criticism from some residents and advocacy groups. Concerns have been raised about the sustainability of construction jobs once the facility is complete and the substantial water and power demands of such a large data center. Alaina DiLaura of the Alliance for Affordable Energy expressed worries that the energy needs could lead to increased power bills for all Entergy Louisiana customers, not just those in Richland Parish.

Governor Landry has assured residents that they will be protected from any additional costs associated with the data center's infrastructure needs, stating that Meta's investment will ensure Louisiana residents are not burdened by these expenses. He suggested that other states have faced challenges when data center infrastructure needs were not adequately addressed.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has indicated that the Hyperion facility will be crucial for training current and future AI models. He has previously envisioned the data center potentially rivaling the size of Manhattan.

Data centers, comprised of thousands of servers, are fundamental to internet infrastructure, processing and storing vast amounts of data for online platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Meta operates 28 data centers globally to support its operations.
