Social media giant Meta has agreed to a settlement of up to $16.7 billion with 29 U.S. states to resolve a court case addressing child safety concerns on its platforms, Facebook and Instagram. The agreement was reached during a federal court trial in California.
As part of the settlement, Meta is required to implement specific new rules for teenage users. These measures include the introduction of daily usage limits and night-time restrictions.
Meta has denied any wrongdoing in its decision to settle the case. The company's agreement aims to resolve claims brought forth by the 29 participating states.
