Meta Faces Growing Speculation of New Stock Issuance to Fund AI Ambitions

Speculation is mounting that Meta Platforms may issue new stock to fund its substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, even as financial markets express growing uncertainty about the potential returns on these large-scale AI bets. The holding company for Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms has seen its stock price fluctuate as investors grapple with Mark Zuckerberg's ambitious AI spending plans.

One factor contributing to market optimism has been the recent introduction of Meta's new AI personal assistant platform, Muse, led by Alexandr Wang. Historically, Meta has financed its AI expansion through debt issuance rather than new stock sales, which can dilute existing shareholder value and depress share prices. However, market participants, particularly short sellers, are increasingly anticipating a significant secondary stock offering.

According to reports, short interest positioning in Meta has increased by over 20%, representing approximately 33 million shares, since mid-August. This rise in short interest aligns with the recent volatility in Meta's stock, as short sellers bet on the possibility of a dilutive event.

Larry McDonald of The Bear Traps Reports indicated that his sources within the short-selling community are preparing for a "monster secondary." The prevailing sentiment among these investors is that Meta may have little choice but to sell stock, given the immense scale of its AI expenditures. The company is reportedly spending $145 billion this year alone, despite holding approximately $90 billion in cash.

Zuckerberg might aim to time a potential stock sale to coincide with a recent upswing in Meta's stock price, which has seen a year-to-date increase of over 6% despite market fluctuations. Additionally, the anticipated euphoria surrounding the upcoming Anthropic IPO could provide a favorable market environment for Meta to raise capital. The Anthropic IPO is expected to follow the filing of an S-1 prospectus in the coming days, with Meta's stock sale potentially occurring around the Thanksgiving holiday.

Despite the bearish sentiment reflected in short selling, the "long thesis" for Meta also holds appeal. The successful rollout of Muse, coupled with potential productivity gains driven by AI and strategic investments in products like Ray-Ban smart glasses, presents a case for continued growth. A Meta spokesperson declined to confirm or deny any plans for a secondary stock offering.
