Met Police Investigating if Letter About Meghan Markle's Father Was Passed to Duchess
Scotland Yard is attempting to confirm if officers were involved in sharing a letter with Meghan Markle in 2018 that contained allegations against her father, Thomas Markle Sr.
The Metropolitan Police is investigating reports that a letter concerning allegations against Thomas Markle Sr., father of the Duchess of Sussex, was passed to Meghan in 2018. The police force is undertaking internal inquiries to confirm if officers from its Royalty and Specialist Protection Command were involved in sharing such a letter.
A spokesperson for the Met stated, "We are aware of media reports that officers from the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection Command were involved in the passing on of a letter in 2018. We are undertaking enquiries internally in an effort to confirm this."
The Daily Mail understands that the Metropolitan Police has not, and is not currently, investigating Thomas Markle Sr. himself.
Sources have indicated that UK authorities had previously informed the Duchess that allegations made about her father in a 2018 letter, sent to Scotland Yard and subsequently shared with her by police, were being investigated. It is understood the letter was sent to Meghan in the summer of 2018, after her wedding to Prince Harry.
Meghan issued a statement expressing her distress over the recent news and her concern for any potential child victims. "In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection," she stated. "That letter was subsequently shared with me. It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated."
She added, "I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications' distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them. I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families."
Meghan's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed to have found child sex abuse images belonging to their father at his former home in the Philippines. Thomas Markle Sr. has denied these claims, calling them "sick lies."
Meghan became estranged from her father, a former TV lighting director, in the lead-up to her 2018 royal wedding after he was implicated in staging paparazzi photographs. Thomas Markle Sr. did not attend the wedding, with King Charles III walking Meghan down the aisle.
Thomas Markle Sr. moved to the Philippines in 2025 after suffering a series of strokes and later had a leg amputated during life-saving surgery in December. A spokesperson for the Duchess later revealed that Meghan had "reached out" to her father following the operation, with reports suggesting previous attempts to connect. He is currently in a rehabilitation center in Florida learning to walk again.
