The Metropolitan Police have concluded a week-long intelligence-led operation aimed at tackling gun crime and serious violence across the South London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark. The operation, dubbed Operation Gallium, led to nearly 300 arrests and the seizure of 38 dangerous weapons.
During the crackdown, officers executed warrants, conducted stop-and-searches, and apprehended individuals involved in gang-related activities contributing to rising serious youth violence. The initiative was a direct response to increased gang tensions and several high-profile violent incidents in recent months.
Operation Gallium Results
Operation Gallium resulted in a total of 297 arrests, leading to 238 charges for offenses including possession of dangerous weapons, drug supply, and attempted murder. A significant number of stop-and-searches, totaling 233, led to 40 arrests. Police also conducted 13 weapons sweeps, recovering 38 dangerous items, including knives and firearms.
One notable incident during the week involved two plainclothes officers stopping a 28-year-old man on a stolen moped in Brixton. The man was found to be carrying a bag containing MDMA, cocaine, and a mixture known as "pink cocaine." He was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and grievous bodily harm after striking an officer with a crowbar. The suspect has since been bailed pending further inquiries.
Context of Violence in London Boroughs
Lambeth and Southwark have been focal points for gang-related tensions and violent incidents. Between January 1 and June 3, these boroughs recorded ten homicides, accounting for nearly 20 percent of the 55 homicides in London during that period. While knife crime in both boroughs fell by 18 percent in the year to June 30, gun crime saw an increase of 5 percent in Lambeth and 11 percent in Southwark.
Recent incidents include the fatal stabbing of Abdulkadir Mahamed, 22, in Clapham on July 25, for which a murder charge has been filed. On the same day, an armed individual pointed a gun at a man outside a store in Vauxhall, though the firearm reportedly jammed. Additionally, three men have been charged with the murder of Kamahl Cameron-Williams, 31, in Crystal Palace on June 21.
Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, who led Operation Gallium, stated that the activity is part of a sustained campaign to reduce violence. She acknowledged that gangs continue to inflict harm and emphasized the police's determination to take robust action against those driving serious violence.
Police data indicates that over the past 18 months, the number of the most serious violent offenses has decreased by almost 20 percent, and lethal gunshot victims have reduced by 27 percent. Homicides remain at their lowest recorded per capita rate of 1.1 per 100,000.
