Mentally Ill Man Convicted of Manslaughter in Fatal Garden Stabbing
An 82-year-old retired engineer died after being repeatedly stabbed by a neighbor suffering from delusions and a history of drug abuse.
A 51-year-old man has been handed a hospital order after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of his 82-year-old neighbor, Gerald Ring, who was fatally stabbed in his own garden. Julian Donoher admitted to the lesser charge of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility after psychological assessments revealed he suffers from schizoaffective disorder.
Donoher attacked Mr. Ring in the early afternoon of September 6, 2025, as the retired civil engineer sat in his front garden. According to prosecutors, Donoher approached Mr. Ring, produced a knife from his pocket, and began stabbing him repeatedly. Despite managing to return inside his home and call emergency services, Mr. Ring died three days later in hospital from his injuries.
Following the attack, Donoher reportedly walked away calmly and made delusional claims that he had killed a "paedophile" and would be considered a "legend in prison." Evidence presented in Derby Crown Court indicated that Donoher has a history of substance misuse, including cannabis, alcohol, heroin, cocaine, and Mamba, dating back to age 20. He also had multiple previous convictions for violence and drug possession.
Prosecutors accepted the manslaughter plea after establishing Donoher's diminished responsibility due to his mental health condition. Medical professionals indicated that his drug use was a significant contributing factor to his state. The court heard that Donoher had not taken his prescribed mental health medication for approximately nine months prior to the attack.
Mr. Ring, who had a history of blood cancer and mobility issues, was described by neighbors as a "pleasant man" and a keen gardener. His family expressed their devastation and called for stricter regulations for offenders with mental health issues. They had urged the judge to impose a custodial sentence rather than a hospital order.
"He attacked my dad who was 82 years old and sat in a chair," said Mr. Ring's daughter, Sapphire Greatorex. "I'd like it to never happen to another family again, but that's idealistic. I think things need to change, huge changes need to be made."
Judge Shaun Smith KC, in handing down the hospital order, stated that Donoher had "completely shattered the lives of Mr. Ring's family and they will never recover." He added, "You brutally and repeatedly stabbed him and afterwards you put the knife in your pocket and walked away not caring about what you had done."
