Men Attack Police Dog on Chicago's Red Line Subway

A recent video circulating on social media shows a group of men attacking a police dog and its handler on the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Red Line subway. The incident, which occurred on October 17 at the 69th Street station, involved several individuals confronting officers and their K-9 unit.

Footage from the altercation depicts at least one man kicking the K-9 dog while another appears to throw punches at the CTA officer. The officer repeatedly warned the aggressor to stay back as the dog was being kicked. The K-9 unit, a partnership between CTA and private contractor Action K-9 Security, was deployed in 2022 to enhance safety on the rail system following post-pandemic concerns.

Each K-9 team consists of two unarmed guards and one dog. When the program began, CTA President Dorval R Carter Jr. stated that the K-9 units were intended to fulfill the CTA's commitment to the security of its customers and employees. The CTA awarded Action K-9 a contract worth $30.9 million, funded by its annual operating budget. A subsequent two-year contract, effective last year, reportedly cost $89.6 million.

This incident follows a report by ABC 7 Chicago's I-Team last month, which uncovered hundreds of complaints related to the mistreatment of dogs handled by Action K-9. The investigation into the company's practices was prompted by an attorney's request for government records pertaining to the Action K-9 contract, which were initially difficult to obtain. According to ABC 7, the CTA provided 133 customer complaints involving Action K-9 since 2022.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the CTA and the Chicago Police Department for further comment.
