Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has a longtime partner, Melvin E. Clark Jr., a 75-year-old former tax attorney and current transit construction executive whose relationship with the mayor has largely remained out of the public eye.
Clark, who resides near Washington D.C., is the president, owner, and CEO of G.W. Peoples Contracting Co., a firm specializing in transit construction with projects nationwide, including in Los Angeles. The couple has been in a relationship for several years.
Clark has accompanied Bass during significant moments in her political career, such as her 2022 mayoral primary victory celebration and her inauguration. He has also been seen with her during private travel, including a recent trip to Pittsburgh.
Bass has rarely spoken about the relationship publicly. In April 2022, she referred to Clark as “my partner Melvin” in a holiday message.
Clark's professional background includes founding Metroplex Corp. in the early 1980s after working as a tax attorney. Metroplex, a minority-owned rail and highway construction business, secured contracts with military bases and transit agencies before Clark sold the company to Balfour Beatty in 2000. He later acquired G.W. Peoples.
G.W. Peoples Contracting Co. has been involved in transportation projects across the country. The company previously received a $13 million contract for the Regional Connector, a Metro project in downtown Los Angeles that began before Bass took office as mayor.
Clark has also maintained political ties, having served on a delegation to Africa during the Clinton administration and testified before Congress on issues of discrimination and contracting opportunities in the railroad industry.
Clark's financial support for Bass includes a $1,000 donation to her congressional campaign in 2017 and a maximum contribution of $1,800 to her mayoral reelection campaign. The couple maintains a long-distance relationship, with travel between Los Angeles and the East Coast.
Despite Bass's extensive career in public service, Clark is not mentioned in her official biography and has largely remained absent from her public political image.
