Melissa McCarthy's upcoming role as Patsy Ramsey in a new Netflix miniseries about the JonBenét Ramsey murder has surprised and, in some cases, concerned fans.
Netflix announced Wednesday that the limited series, which will also feature Clive Owen as John Ramsey, is set to debut later this year. The series aims to "explore how the murder of the 6-year-old captivated - and divided - the nation," according to a synopsis on the streaming service's Tudum website. It promises to unravel "speculation and unresolved grief" from multiple perspectives.
Upon the announcement, social media users voiced a range of reactions to McCarthy, primarily known for comedic roles, portraying the late mother of JonBenét Ramsey. Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in 2006 at the age of 49.
Some fans questioned the casting choice, with one user stating on social media that "Casting McCarthy as Patsy Ramsey is a bold choice, but it risks turning a grim tragedy into a caricature." The concern was that "It's hard to maintain the tension of a cold case when the lead's comedic timing is that recognizable." Another user sarcastically suggested, "Please tell me this is a slapstick comedy."
Others defended the casting, with one user noting that "McCarthy as Patsy Ramsey is bold casting against-type drama roles work when actors commit fully." However, some also commented on the perceived redundancy of retelling the Ramsey case, which has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and dramatizations since the beauty pageant contestant's death in 1996.
Further concerns were raised about the potential narrative of the series. One user expressed apprehension that "Netflix out here about to make the Ramsey the sexiest most sympathetic parents on the planet."
JonBenét Ramsey was found deceased in her Boulder, Colorado, home on December 26, 1996. The investigation into her unsolved death remains open. Authorities had previously cleared Patsy and John Ramsey, along with their son Burke, of suspicion. In 2008, then-District Attorney Mary Lacy stated in a letter to John Ramsey that DNA evidence had eliminated the immediate family as suspects.
The miniseries was initially developed for Paramount+ but was later not picked up by the platform. Emily Mitchell is cast as JonBenét Ramsey, and the ensemble includes Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, Chris Bauer, Shea Whigham, Owen Teague, Clifton Collins Jr., Angus Caldwell, and Jaime Ray Newman.
