Melissa McCarthy Offers Theory on JonBenét Ramsey Case Ahead of Netflix Role
The actress, portraying Patsy Ramsey, stated her personal belief that no family member was involved in the 1996 murder.
Melissa McCarthy, who is set to portray Patsy Ramsey in Netflix's upcoming series "The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey," has shared her personal theory regarding the unsolved 1996 murder of the young pageant queen. McCarthy stated in an interview with Variety that her "heart says no one in the family could have done that," acknowledging it's a personal feeling and not an official conclusion.
McCarthy, 56, said she has thoroughly reviewed police and coroner reports for her role. She described the Netflix series as a "character study" rather than a "whodunnit," and expressed a sense of compassion for Patsy Ramsey, stating, "I have so much compassion for them, what they went through, and go through currently."
JonBenét Ramsey was discovered deceased in the basement of her Boulder, Colorado, home on December 26, 1996. She had been found bludgeoned and bound, and no one has ever been successfully prosecuted for her murder. The case has been the subject of intense public debate and numerous theories for decades.
McCarthy and Clive Owen will play John and Patsy Ramsey in the Netflix production. Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in 2006. Her husband, John Ramsey, remarried in 2011.
Earlier this year, John Ramsey called for new DNA testing in the case following the guilty plea of former Colorado Bureau of Investigation forensic analyst Yvonne "Missy" Woods on multiple charges, including cybercrime and perjury. While Woods' misconduct did not reportedly affect the evidence in JonBenét's case, Ramsey expressed a desire for testing to be conducted by an independent facility.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of JonBenét's death. The case garnered renewed attention in 2016 when JonBenét's brother, Burke Ramsey, filed a $750 million defamation lawsuit against CBS. Burke Ramsey, who was nine at the time of his sister's death, sued after a CBS documentary suggested he might have been involved in the murder, a claim that investigators did not support. The lawsuit was later settled for an undisclosed sum.
