Melissa Gilbert Celebrates Dismissal of Husband Timothy Busfield's Charges with Willy Wonka Quote

Melissa Gilbert marked the dismissal of child sex charges against her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, by sharing a quote from the beloved film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." The actress, known for her role in "Little House on the Prairie," posted the line "So shines a good deed in a weary world," famously spoken by Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.

A New Mexico judge dismissed the criminal indictment against Busfield, who had faced allegations of inappropriately touching twin boys. The judge cited prosecutorial misconduct and significant errors in the grand jury proceedings as reasons for the dismissal. Busfield's attorney stated that the actor was "relieved and grateful" following the ruling.

The allegations stemmed from claims made by the parents of twin boys who appeared on the television series "The Cleaning Lady," which Busfield directed. The parents alleged that Busfield had engaged in inappropriate behavior with the children. According to a criminal complaint filed in January, one of the boys told investigators that Busfield had touched his private areas over his clothing on multiple occasions.

Busfield's defense team argued that the children initially denied any inappropriate contact during police interviews and accused the boys' parents of coaching them after their roles on the show were terminated. The defense also pointed to an independent Warner Bros. investigation that, according to Busfield's lawyers, found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Legal arguments intensified in June when Busfield's attorneys sought to dismiss the indictment, accusing prosecutors of being "willfully blind to the lack of evidence." During a September hearing, defense attorneys presented recordings of grand jurors requesting additional witnesses, arguing that prosecutors had incorrectly advised them that subpoenas were necessary when the witnesses were readily available.

Prosecutors contested these claims, asserting that Busfield had attempted to improperly influence the grand jury during his own testimony. Busfield himself denied the allegations, stating emphatically, "I'm saying that is absolutely one gazillion percent untrue. Never ever."

Throughout the legal battle, Gilbert remained steadfast in her support of her husband. In an interview earlier this year, she expressed her unwavering trust in him, stating, "I know this man in my bones. No one knows him better than I do. I know literally everything about him." She also acknowledged the profound impact the accusations had on their lives, describing it as "hell" and lamenting that "Our life as we knew it is done."

Busfield's legal team has indicated that while the indictment has been dismissed, prosecutors may still seek to pursue another indictment. "We know this may not be the end," said attorney Amanda Fayerberg. "If the State chooses to try again, Tim is ready, and so are those witnesses."

The couple, who married in 2013, had relocated upstate from their Manhattan apartment as Busfield fought to clear his name. Gilbert had previously shared her emotional struggles with the situation, admitting that the scandal had been "the most traumatizing experience of our lives."
